A solid four stars for this Mt. Airy Sushi joint and Japanese restaurant. I was visiting my parents back home and they took me Katana, their favorite local sushi place. Admittedly, I was initially skeptical but decided to give it a try and I'm glad I did. I was very pleased with Katana. Was it the best sushi I've ever had? No. But VERY good. Plus, we were seated right away (a far cry from the hour and half long waits for the good sushi places in the city) and the decor was new and tasteful. The service was decent and fairly prompt. I was disappointed by the miso soup, a must-have for me. It was extremely bland and lacked oomph. But maybe it was an off batch. Nevertheless, I will definitely be back whenever I'm visiting my folks.

Friendly and quick service, quality food. Teriyaki shrimp box dinner and tuna. Beautiful decor. Open to 9pm on Sunday.

Descent food. The waitresses need to learn to not hover over the kids, and NOT touch kids. Learn about personal space. Thought this was an isolated incident the first time, but a second visit confirmed it.

OK. Pricey for what you get. Food is ok.

Good solid food. Katsu is very good and we like the sushi also.

I have been to this place twice and it's pretty solid in terms of sushi - haven't ordered much else. It's very surprising there's a place this good in Mt. Airy, MD - kind of a novelty. The staff are very attentive and sweet. The seaweed salad I ordered was a bit too watery, but the sushi itself was lovely. They include mango in several of their rolls, and it's very delicious. It's expensive, but I think that's because of its novelty in the mt airy area

Hard to believe you can get good sushi in Mt. Airy, Md, but this place delivers it. The service was a little slow and the wait staff seemed a little under staffed. The food though made up for it.

Used to be really good but became hit or miss. We were still willing to give it another chance, but nothing could have prepared us for the terrible experience we had there tonight. Miso- lukewarm. Seared tuna appetizer- impossible to chew and FISHY! Beef teriyaki was inedible, like a cafeteria version. We could not even eat the tuna or the yellowtail sushi, it was cut so thick and was dried out The rest of the sushi and rolls were mediocre and definitely did not make up for the other disappointments. Unbelievable!

Why bother...worst sushi place ever...and that's coming from my kids....

I was moderately excited when I learned that Mt. Airy would be getting a Japanese restaurant. I did not expect said restaurant to serve some of the best Japanese food I've ever had outside of Japan (and Little Tokyo for that matter). While advertised as a sushi bar, Katana actually has a full (and extensive) menu of traditional Japanese fare. They have an excellent miso soup that I order with every meal, a decent green salad and a variety of bento, noodles, tempura and more. The sushi menu is gigantic and the sushi platters are nothing short of exquisite works of art. (You almost feel ashamed of eating them because they're presented so beautifully.) My trademark favorite is the Combination Yaki-Udon, which is udon noodles that are stir fried in a delectable sauce with beef, chicken and shrimp. (Katana is one of the first Japanese restaurants around here that I've managed to find yakisoba and yakiudon dishes at, which is reason enough in itself to love this place.) I also have reason to thank Katana for serving Takaokaya brand Japanese Sencha, to which I have become a complete addict. This is some of the best tasting bagged green tea I've ever had and I highly recommend it. If it wasn't for this restaurant, I'd have never discovered it! The dessert menu is small, but it contains the greatest of Japanese desserts; mochi ice cream! It's even available in red (adzuki) bean and green tea flavors. If you aren't familiar with mochi or mochi ice cream, now's your chance to get familiar. It's fantastic! The service at Katana is excellent. The wait staff is so friendly and attentive; if you go there more than once, they will recognize you. After my first 2 or 3 trips, they remembered me, as well as what I ordered during my past visits. Impressive! Katana brings real class to Mt. Airy. You won't be disappointed!

I was so excited when Katana opened in Mount Airy, but it's turned out to be a big disappointment. The sushi is good, but the other dishes are bland, including the soups. The worst part is that the prices are horrendous for the amount of food you get and each time I've been there, I feel very rushed. Not a relaxing experience!

Food was good but the reason I gave this a one star was because the hostess was clipping her nails while we ate in the booth near where the hostess was. I was discussed by that sound and it makes me never want to eat here again.

I've been to almost every sushi offering between Wallington DC and Frederick, MD, and Katana in Mt. Airy is by far my favorite place. They have fresh ingredients, a VERY wide selection, authentic and unique creations that are visually stunning, reasonably priced... this place embodies what a real sushi experience is all about.

We love all the sushi here. The service is good. Very friendly. The sweet potato roll I Is delish. We also love the shrimp tempura appetizer. We always get spicy mayo on side to dip our sushi or tempura into. The lunch special is the best deal. Until 3pm Monday through Friday. Two or three rolls plus soup or salad for cheap, between 9 and 12 dollars.

Really pleasantly surprised here. Nice clean decor and good service. I got the miso soup (good) , green salad (meh) and split the California rolls (not soo good, barely any crab) , spicy tuna (good), Philly roll (good) , and the crunch roll ( the best one) . Will definitely return and try more of their specialty rolls.

My wife and I dropped in last weekend. Pretty solid experience overall. Miso soup was solid, we ordered a few basic rolls and those were definitely a step up from what you'd find at most sushi places, high quality, not a lot of rice, very good. The spicy tuna roll was on point. When it comes to the chef specialties, I was underwhelmed with the choices, most were focused on Shrimp Tempura or had a lot of Mayo - two things I personally don't seek out for sushi. We'll try it again in the future - good sushi in Mount Airy. 3.5/5

My wife and I come here almost every Friday evening and have never had a bad experience. The sushi selection comes with variety and reasonable prices. The staff is always friendly and quick, and I have to mention the warm, helpful hostesses who always make us feel welcome. Can't wait until our next visit, thanks for the great service!

Katana is in our regular rotation of restaurants. The sushi is consistently excellent, creative, and tasty. The service is always good; we've gotten to know the staff well and they remember us always. They recently did some redecorating inside and it looks great; great Japanese atmosphere without being gaudy or overdone or cheap. They have small and large private party areas. Carry out is also always good. It is our favorite sushi in the area.

I have only tried the sushi and it's mediocre at best and very overpriced. Sushi prices are similar to Bethesda sushi prices and the quality is not very good. They are skimpi on the fish and put a lot of filler in thier rolls.

Very nice interior look and feel. Service is standard, portions are generous, and the price might seem slightly high but not when you factor the larger amount of food.

Pricey but the BEST sushi place I have eaten at in Maryland. Everything is delicious. I highly recommend this place!

Really, really extensive menu & HUGE portions. The sashimi plate was fresh & beautiful, the california rolls were delicious. I had a box dinner of beef negimaki - which, again was HUGE - with shrimp tempura, vegetable tempura, california rolls, & rice (there may have been more). I found I'm not a fan of beef negimaki though - it is served on a bed of onions & is thinly sliced beef rolled around scallions. This was a bit too oniony for me & I wouldn't try it again. One daughter had the chock-full beef udon soup w/vegetables, which came in a crock the size of her head, and the daughter had the salmon teriyaki w/vegetables & fried rice. The friend rice was the best we've had in a long time: not oily at all & the rice is tender. The staff is, of course, very friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was nicely decorated, tidy, pleasant & well-spaced. Be prepared: it is a bit expensive, depending on what you order, which, I guess I didn't really expect from the exterior of the restaurant. It's in a new strip mall type building, and the windows are blocked from the outside. As of October 2011, there are printable coupons on their website at frederick.com , which we used w/o incident. I believe it was 10 dollars off over $20 or 10% off over $75. These do no include drinks. frederick.com/katana_jap…

A surprising find in unlikely place. The sushi was high quality. And the service was perfect, attentive and friendly and warm. The establishment was clean and comfortable.

I've eaten at Katana many times, both dine-in and carry-out, and I haven't been disappointed a single time. Their sushi is great, their other dinner items are great, their staff is delightful and I've recommended it to friends. If I had to make ONE complaint, I'd say that some items are kinda pricey, but they're TOTALLY worth it. Eat here if you can!

Really really good. Really really expensive.

  • Erin J.

They're not that good and they over charge. They over charge a lot. The benefits of this place: you can pretty much bet that everything is fresh. However, you do get a lot of rice with every roll. I can't wait for another sushi restaurant to open up in Mt. Airy so they don't have a monopoly for this type of dining any longer. I'm ready for a decent, hole-in-the-wall sushi place with better prices.

We tried 4 different types of sushi! They were all good the only thing was the dynamite roll was not as spicy as I was expecting it to be! I ended up having to put more wasabi in my soy sauce to get the kick I wanted. The pineapple upside down cake martini was to die for. The atmosphere was amazing and everyone was super friendly!

Rolls are a little pricey and small, but always consistently good sushi. I mostly order there lunch box, come here at least twice a month.

We love this place. Been coming for years. So warm and personable. From the Hostess, to the Sushi chefs, to the Owners. We love to sit at the bar, and often times get take out.

I am super picky when it comes to sushi. I dine at Katana at least 4x a month. Their lemon drop martini's are amazing. They offer a variety of rolls. I start off with miso soup which never disappoints and a Kani salad. I like to try new things, but I usually get the Geisha roll....it's my fave! The only con is that it's very pricey.

I had the Vegetable Teriyaki at Katana Japanese Cuisine in Mount Airy, Maryland. Great food, pleasant service, and nice atmosphere.

I'm very glad there is a good sushi place in Mount Airy...I just wish it wasn't so expensive (hence the 4 stars). The price won't however stop me from visiting when I need my sushi fix. Especially since the quality makes up for the price. Everything I've had here has been delicious! As others have mentioned they have a pretty extensive sushi menu as well as an appetizer, soup, sashimi, noodles, teriyaki, hibachi and drink menu. I've tried a variety of rolls but the ones that come to mind are the spicy tuna roll (with or without crunch) and the sky dragon roll. I've had hibachi as well which is tasty but not the same as getting hibachi from an actual hibachi joint. The service is always good and the atmosphere is very nice and kind of intimate. I came here for my birthday with a party of 9 including a baby and they were very accommodating. Since we made a reservation we were seated at a somewhat private table in the back that was low Japanese style seating with a beaded curtain. It was fun!

The best sushi in the Frederick area. I've been to most of them and this is by far the best I've tried. Huge selection too. More options than most places. Even has brown rice sushi for you healthy hippies out there. Looking for sushi. Check this place out for sure.

I have been here a few times, most recently this past Sunday. This place never disappoints me! They have a huge selection of sushi for you to choose from, I can never make up my mind because I want them all haha. The service is always prompt. I'm always surprised at how fast the food comes out, but I've also only gone when there are not a bunch of people there. The decor is traditional and I love the dim lighting. The last time I went I got the hot summer roll, red roof roll, phili roll and spicy crunchy tuna roll. All delicious and the hot summer roll was hugggge. Yummy in my tummy!

I have enjoyed all of the sushi that I've tried here. The service is good. and has always been very prompt. The staff is always very friendly too. Some of the rolls are a bit on the pricey side, but I guess that's true for the majority of sushi restaurants. The selection makes up for some of the higher prices. I've also enjoyed the various bento boxes that I've gotten here too. Always get more than I can eat, which must be a sign that the food is good, right?

Another sushi fave! Everything is always so tasty and fresh! The wait staff is friendly and it's nice that it's not always super busy. Menu is amazing and I always order something different and have never been disappointed!

We order sushi rolls on carry out regularly, usually selecting the special and other rolls off the menu. The food is always very fresh and very tasty. Sometimes we'll enjoy the dining room and have enjoyed their box dinners, for a change of pace, very tasty as well.

My husband is a health inspector, and this is one of the places we love to eat at! The sushi is solid-4.5/5 stars. It is always well put together, and the entrees are delicious too. The staff are prompt, friendly, and I have never had any issues with service. I highly recommend this place.

great to have some diversity in mt airy finally. Not the best sushi I have ever had, but the service is impeccable. I have gone for solo lunch on multiple occasions and each time the sushi chef created a small plate to taste while waiting for the food i ordered. The rest of the staff bends over backwards each and every time someone walks through the door.

The sushi was fresh and the service was highly attentive and friendly. Atmosphere is comfortable and the staff is patient regarding language differences and great at helping patient customers to overcome the barrier.

We decided to try this new place. But to my surprise it was not that great. The two Stars pricing is very inaccurate and is more like three or more. The Service was Ok, nothing to write home about. I have eaten at some of the finest Japanese Restaurants in the US and abroad. This one is sub par. I have been in little hole in the wall places in Asia and they were less expensive, and friendlier. Rates only one Star (sorry Marry B.) not worth the time or trouble to find.

Although Katana is a little pricey for dinner, the lunch specials are fantastic. Also the amount and size of the sushi (and items in boxes) is fairly large. I've gotten the sashimi multiple times and found it to be just as good as in japan where I lived. I would say the service is only average and at times I haven't understood a word the waitresses were saying but it didn't take away from how good the sushi was.

Staff is very pleasant and servers are very attentive. Nice addition to the Mt. Airy restaurant scene. Portions are large but prices are a little high. We've eaten at the Katana in Clarksville also. Sushi is very good (not great) in both places. Kids love the California rolls. The avacado salad is beautiful to the eye & delicious as well. Shrimp tempura and beef negimaki are also good. Pass on the fried ice cream... it's just a small ice cream scoop, tempura battered & fried.

I am so happy to have a sushi place in Mount Airy. The service and sashimi are excellent. I stop in often by myself since my family are not the same die hard sushi addicts that I am. I have never ordered off the menu, so I can't speak to that... but the people who work there are so wonderful. I would suggest it if you are in the area and like sushi... it is always fresh.

The sushi was amazing. I only gave 4 stars because the service was slow, we were there for 2 hours and only ordered tuna tartar and sushi. But it was worth the wait!! We will be back!
